Pest-Proof Your Home This Summer

As the temperatures rise, so does the activity of unwanted summer guests... pests! Not only are they irritating, but they can also cause damage and even scare off potential buyers if you’re planning to sell. But the good news? A little prevention goes a long way.
Here are some easy and effective ways to pest-proof your home this summer:
1. Seal Entry Points
Pests will squeeze through the tiniest of cracks and crevices. Take a walk around your home, property, sheds and outbuildings to inspect windows and doorframes, foundation gaps and utility entry point such as where pipes and cables come in. Use weather stripping, caulking, mesh screens and even steel wool to close up potential entrances.
2. Keep a Clean Kitchen
Crumbs and spills attract ants, mice and other pests. Make a habit of wiping down counters, sweeping floors and taking out trash regularly. Store food in sealed containers and keep your counters clear. And as an added bonus, a clean kitchen makes a great impression if you're trying to sell or show a home!
3. Remove Standing Water
Mosquitoes love to breed in stagnant water. To avoid this, check for clogged gutters, birdbaths, kiddie pools, plant saucers and even pet water bowls. Empty, clean and refresh these regularly to stop mosquitoes before they start.
4. Trim Back Trees and Bushes
Overgrown vegetation provides shelter and easy access for pests like rodents and ants. Trim back bushes and tree branches that touch or hang too close to your home’s roof or siding. This not only keeps pests away, but it also boosts your home’s curb appeal and helps prevent future damage in the next storm.
5. Maintain Your Yard
A tidy yard can help prevent a pest infestation. Keep your grass trimmed, remove yard waste promptly, and consider installing gravel or mulch barriers near the foundation to deter crawling insects.
6. Consider a Professional Inspection
If you’ve had issues in the past or just want peace of mind, it may be worth having a pest control professional do a seasonal checkup. They can spot potential issues early and recommend targeted treatments.
