Stay Cool: Home Cooling Tips for Hot Summer Days

Summers in Ontario come with sunny days, long evenings and plenty of time to enjoy patios, parks and the outdoors. But when the temperature rises and the humidity kicks in, staying cool at home becomes a top priority. Here are a few practical, energy-smart tips to keep your home cool and comfortable all summer long.
1. Close the Blinds (Especially in the Afternoon)
Direct sunlight can raise the temperature in your home by several degrees. Closing blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day (typically between noon and 4 p.m.) can help block out the heat and keep indoor temperatures manageable. Consider blackout curtains or reflective window film for even better results.
2. Use Fans Strategically
Ceiling fans, box fans and even small desk fans can make a big difference. In the summer, set ceiling fans to spin counter-clockwise to create a cooling breeze. You can also place a bowl of ice in front of a fan for a DIY air conditioner effect in smaller spaces.
3. Switch to LED Lighting
Traditional incandescent bulbs give off a surprising amount of heat. Switching to LED bulbs not only helps reduce indoor heat but also lowers your energy bill. It's a win-win!
4. Cook Smart
Ovens and stovetops can heat up your kitchen fast. Try using the BBQ outside, or opt for quick stovetop meals, slow cookers or air fryers. Better yet, enjoy fresh summer salads, sandwiches and no-cook meals.
5. Seal and Insulate
If your home feels warm even with the AC running, poor insulation or gaps around windows and doors might be the culprit. Sealing air leaks and adding insulation (especially in attics or basements) can help your cooling system work more efficiently.
6. Program Your Thermostat
If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, set it to raise the temperature slightly when you’re out and cool down just before you return. Maintaining a steady, efficient temperature is easier on your system and more cost-effective.
7. Stay Low
Heat rises. If you have a multi-storey home, consider spending more time on lower floors during the hottest part of the day. Basements tend to stay cooler naturally—perfect for a movie night or quiet reading spot.
8. Give Your AC some TLC
Make sure your air conditioner is in top shape. Clean or replace filters regularly, keep vents clear and have it serviced annually. A well-maintained AC runs more efficiently and lasts longer.
